The 100: The Garden (7.02) Things of Note

The mystery of where Octavia and Diyoza ended up after going into the Anomaly is finally solved! Of course, there are more questions. Let’s jump in!

Three months in three seconds. Flashback to when Diyoza and Octavia went through the Anomaly. We see Gabriel’s point in action when Octavia arrived on the other side three months after Diyoza even though she was seconds behind. Octavia delivers Hope and their lives together begin. Holding Hope and soothing her the way Bellamy did for her when she was born helped her to understand his drive to protect her. The planet is far from a black hole which causes time dilation. Eligius knew of that so that could explain how Gabriel knew about the time differential. However, he didn’t know Beta was on the other side of the Anomaly. I still think he may have been in there before. Maybe prior to the Disciples getting control of it.

Memories return. Hope’s memories returned as soon as she emerged from the water. She remembers that she named the planet Skyring, the location of the Anomaly stone and that Octavia hates Echo’s guts and therefore she does too! Gabriel and Echo kept their memories as did Octavia and Diyoza when they arrived on Skyring. It looks like memory loss only occurs when people go from Skyring to another world.

Happy Family. The scenes with Diyoza, Octavia, and Hope were beautiful moments of peace in the chaotic world of The 100. They made such a nice family. They had a cabin and a garden to grow vegetables. There were no threats to speak of. Diyoza was the happiest she had ever been. Hope was growing up in a world free of violence and strife. Diyoza didn’t even want to teach her how to fight! Octavia was happy too but she wanted to get back to Bellamy. She tried every day for 6 years to get back to Sanctum without success. It’s interesting to note that 6 years was how long she was Blodreina. She might have had a chance with the suit she found on the body buried in the garden. However, Diyoza smashed the helmet preventing her from using the suit. Finally accepting that she will likely never leave, Octavia wrote Bellamy a note telling him that she understands why he did what he did and that the bunker did awaken darkness within her. This new outlook is probably why the Anomaly “called” her. I wonder if this life with Diyoza and Hope is what she would have seen had she chose the blue box instead of the red box.

The Disciples. The Bardo folks are called the Disciples and they’re led by a person named Anders. From what Hope told Echo and Gabriel, they are warriors that prize devotion above all else. Sounds like a cult. Could they be associated with Second Dawn and Cadogan? Although they were still on Earth after the bombs hit, Becca did come down and try to save them. Maybe a small band of Second Dawn took the ship and ended up flying to Bardo. Another possibility is that it’s one of the other mission teams (Gamma, Delta, Epsilon) who happen to master the Anomaly on their assigned world and used it to get to Bardo. Whoever they are, I’m interested to learn more about them.

Isolation Madness. The Disciples are using Skyring as a prison for members who go astray. The planet is actually less hostile than Sanctum so the punishment is mainly isolation. Unless you don’t know how to farm. Then, starvation is also part of the punishment. The current prisoner has a real bad case of isolation madness (a mood for 2020!). He’s so lonely that he dug up dead bodies for companionship! His timer showed 5 years left on his sentence. Either he went mad early or he’s been there for a while. I have to wonder what The Disciples do with these members when they finish their time. Even if they eat well, years of isolation definitely takes a toll. Maybe Disciples just expect them to fall back in line to avoid going back?

Memory viewing. While trying to get the prisoner to help get them off Skyring, Gabriel recognized a name on the shirt of one of the bodies. Turns out, he was Colin Benson, an astrophysicist and a member of Mission Team Beta. The memory drive was still intact so Gabriel grabbed it and was able to watch it with his memory viewer. Of course, he had to check and see if Josephine’s mind was really gone before proceeding. After everything, he still loves her. Anyway, he played Colin’s drive to see if he could find a code to activate the bridge to Bardo. Mission Team Beta crash-landed on Skyring and everyone but Colin was killed. Colin went down to the Anomaly stone every day until he could crack the code. When he finally got the right memory, Gabriel left the tablet (why though?!) to look for a writing utensil. The prisoner took the memory viewer and smashed it stating that he must serve his time and that he serves the master. The memory of the Anomaly rising from the lake must have scared him. I think that had Gabriel paused it on another image, the prisoner wouldn’t have wanted to smash the viewer. The memory drive was still intact and there was a shot of Gabriel’s insertion scar. Someone on Twitter predicted that the drive will be put into Echo. I think I might agree with that. Since it’s a memory drive, there’s no need to do a mind-wipe and there shouldn’t be a risk of mind-melting. However, it does require serious brain surgery and I don’t believe Gabriel has the tools for that. They might be there for 5 years after all.

Smoke signal. Instead of going to Sanctum, Octavia’s letter went to Bardo which alerted the Disciples to their presence on Skyring/Beta. She threw the bottle into the lake when Hope was 6. The Disciples captured Octavia and Diyoza when Hope was 10. I think the time differential between Bardo and Skyring is greater than the one between Bardo and Sanctum. There is no way the Disciples read the letter, mobilized a team, and went through in 48 seconds. The Disciples didn’t realize that Octavia was referring to a child when she wrote “I have Hope.” I guess that’s fortunate but they find out eventually. Anyway, the Disciples put helmets on Octavia and Diyoza to ensure they remember everything. Octavia does make it back to Sanctum eventually so did she escape and go straight to Sanctum from Bardo or did she go back to Skrying first? She recognized the adult Hope so maybe she did return to Skyring.

Other things. Even though Bellamy was not in the episode, his presence was felt throughout. Seems like Jordan and Hope both have an affinity for Murphy. So, Gabriel had a crush on Becca! I thought that was cute. Also, I love how much he’s geeking out over all of these new discoveries. He’s happiest being a scientist. Echo and Hope got off to a rocky start but I think they will bond. Maybe Octavia and Echo will finally bury the hatchet.

That’s all for now! Until next time!

  1. Madi also loved Murphy! He’s like, all kids’ cult hero hah.

I definitely think they’ll at least TRY to put the thing in Echo. I saw theories that Gabriel would be the one to have it implanted, but HOW?! He’s the only one who knows how to do the procedure, even if like you said, he found the tools. So I like your theory about Echo being the one, as she too is a Nightblood.

I also wondered about the prisoners’ states of mind when they get back to Bardo! Like you’re telling me that Orlando is supposed to be a functional member of society after this!? I think not! I really cannot WAIT until we get to Bardo, I have a feeling that place is gonna make the Sanctum cult look like Disney World 😂

And I agree, the happy moments were LOVELY, especially for Diyoza and Octavia, who have had such little peace in their lives.
