Tuesday Takes 3

Here we are. I tried to keep it light. Let’s jump in.

Plant fail. I was gifted an orchid plant in February and it’s been slowly dying. One by one, the leaves turn yellow and drop off. No new flowers are blooming. It looks like there’s a white fungus on the plant. I did some research and found that overwatering creates the ideal conditions for fungus. I also found that it could be mealy worms. These pests create a white coating around them and it gets mistaken for a fungus. So now I have no idea what wrong with this plant and I’m not sure I can save it. I think I’d have better luck regrowing green onions like the rest of the foodie scene is doing. I might try that this weekend!

Erykah Badu vs Jill Scott. I had seen a few people talking about these Verzuz battles on Instagram but I wasn’t compelled to check them out until this one. Erykah Badu and Jill Scott delivered an experience for the ages! Instead of a traditional battle, we were treated to an uplifting celebration of these incredible black female artists. They had nothing but love for each other and everyone watching. They played their classics (Tyrone for Erykah and Long Walk for Jill, for example) as well as some of the more obscure songs. I had no idea Jill had a steamy song! Or as she put it, beautiful nasty. Overall, it was the best two hours of my whole weekend!

Bubbles! I bought the Opaline Pinot Noir Brut Rosé from Trader Joe’s a few months ago. Before Coronavirus, the Trader Joe’s I frequented had in-store wine tastings. I loved going in there and trying out a couple of wines. I even tried Two Buck Chuck and it was actually decent! Anyway, this bottle was only $7.99 so I bought it. I love sparkling wine but hardly ever buy it because it’s generally for celebrations. There isn’t anything grand to celebrate at the moment but I thought the Erykah Badu vs Jill Scott battle was a good time to open it. For a moment, I felt like I was in a lounge somewhere. Back to the wine, it’s dry, a little fruity, and quite effervescent. The cork actually flew across the counter! Always aim away from your face when opening sparkling wine! Storage tip for leftovers: seal the top with press and seal. I used plastic wrap and it did the job. The wine didn’t lose too much effervescence between Saturday and Sunday.

Bye-bye buffets. Last week, Souplantation closed all of its locations. This could be the beginning of the end of the buffet restaurant. There are so many frequently touched surfaces and it would be impossible to sanitize them all between customers. I doubt people will want to return to buffets even after restrictions are lifted. Some were wary of them even before Coronavirus precisely because of the frequently touched services may not be cleaned. Pivoting to cafeteria-style service might be able to save some places but the end of buffets seems inevitable.

I wanna be done. I’m tired of all the news! There’s so much going on that I can’t keep up. There’s so much pressure to be informed of and react to every single thing happening in the world. I can’t do it! I don’t have the bandwidth. It’s hard to look away though. I have to work on that. Mostly avoiding social media on Sundays has been working out for me so maybe it would help to avoid the news too. Everyone should take a break at some point. There’s a lot to be aware of but it’s important to not let it consume you.

That’s all for now. Until next time.
